According to Sherman, her hand was crushed in the mangle due to a young student accidentally pressing on the control foot while she tried to untangle clothing that was stuck in the rollers. Her hand was burned and crushed for 20 minutes until the disciplinarian was able to assist. Her arm was later amputated by local physicians.
